I hope you hear this all the time, but your workshop changed my life.
Jeremy from Bayfield, WI
Since starting my photography workshop program back in 2006, my main goal has always been to make sure you walk away feeling challenged, accomplished, with new photography skills, and that you get what you want out of the workshop. Plus, hopefully, you’ll have a memory card full of great shots. I also believe that workshops should be fun, and they often help form friendships. I love it when my students, who met on my programs, head off on other adventures together.
For locations, I stick to my favorite spots because, let’s face it, I think they’re just too good not to share, but no two workshops are alike. I like to keep things flexible, so we can hit the best spots at just the right times with the right light. I’ve been known to make a U-turn or two as conditions changed. My goal is to put you in the best learning conditions as possible.
All levels and people are welcome here. Our groups are cozy, usually ranging from 8 to 10 participants, creating an atmosphere that’s more like hanging out with friends than attending a class. And hey, don’t just take my word for it—check out what past workshop attendees have to say.
I divide my photo workshops into three categories:
- Minnesota photography workshops have classroom time, outdoor field time, and an image review session during the workshop dates. For 2024 and 2025, I’ve increased some of my 3-day workshops to 4 days. This was based on feedback to incorporate more image processing instruction and image feedback.
- Destination photo workshops are designed for participants that have taken one of my workshops previously or have equivalent experience. For destination workshops, videos of my presentations are available but not required. You can watch them on your own if you wish. The goal of destination workshops is to emphasize experiential learning by spending more time in the field. For destination workshops if there is an image review, the review takes place after the workshop via an online video conference.
- Online photography workshops have multiple online classroom sessions, and depending on the topic, they can have at-home practice time of up to two weeks between sessions. These are designed to help you learn a subject without having to travel to a national park or the Grand Marais area.
I hold the proper permits where required. I’m an authorized permittee of the National Park Service and hold a Special Use Permit from the U.S. Forest Service.
