2015 Northern Landscapes Calendar

For this year’s calendar I selected images that were all from near Grand Marais. While I did do a good deal a traveling with two visits to the Smoky Mountains and two visits to the Badlands and visits to Florida and elsewhere, I felt like my happiest images were from the Grand Marais area. Over the last few years since I started doing calendars, each year has been remarkably different than the last. In 2012, the calendar felt abstract and dreamy. In 2013, it felt ethereal and ephemeral. In 2014, it felt stark with in-your-face beauty. For 2015, the calendar just feels happy.

Not only does the 2015 calendar feel happy, it feels like a celebration of life. It also includes lots of firsts. First ice, the moon rise, several sunrises, first ice, first light after a snowstorm. In each of the pictures, probably more so than the rest of my work in 2014, glowing light feels like part of the subject. In the fall pictures, the leaves glow. In the winter pictures, the ice and snow just glows. The morning glows on the horizon at the sunrises. In the summer images, the side light makes the harbor glow and the trees glow above a river. I included one night image, which includes a glowing Milky Way, headlamp and a tent.

I only included one night image this year, because I’m planning on doing a second calendar of night images only! That should be fun, because you’ll be able to buy one for home and a different one for work. The night photography calendar will be out in about two weeks, because I need to proof it before I’m ready to sell it.

Like my previous calendars, this is printed on sturdy cardstock and is 11 inches wide by 17 inches long when open, which is the perfect size for the fridge or your office. The center is spiral bound, so that it lays flat against the fridge (I find folded calendars always tend to flip up off the fridge). The colors jump off the page. I added both U.S. and Canadian holidays. At the end of each year, I feel bad recycling mine, because the images look that good.
