Grand Portage State Park Visitor Center

 In North Shore, Picture

I finally made it up to the new visitor center at Grand Portage State Park this weekend. I was out shooting sunrise with a friend on the Grand Portage Reservation, and, although the sunrise wasn’t spectacular, we had fun seeing a few new beaches and hiking back to the highest waterfall in Minnesota, which was completely frozen over.

We got to the park before the visitor center was open, but the lobby and bathrooms are open 24 hours a day. I loved the turtle on the visitor center’s floor, so I decided to snap a shot. Ideally, shooting this just after the sun went down would make a better picture, because the outside detail would show up in the doors, but when you’re there you’re there, so I snapped a few pictures. To bring out the color, I used my polarizing lens, which helped remove some of the reflections from the doors. I also added some contrast in post-processing.

There are seven pillars holding the ceiling up in the lobby, and I couldn’t get the seventh into the pictures. My vague understand is that they stand for Wisdom, Love, Respect, Bravery, Honesty, Humility and Truth.
