This small creek near Cutface Creek rarely runs in the summer, so if you want to photograph it, you must get there in the spring. This is the biggest waterfall on the creek. It’s about 8 feet high. The USGS topo maps call this Rosebush Creek, but long-time Grand Marais and north shore residents call the Fall River Rosebush Creek even though that disagrees with the USGS topo maps. It’s just a small inconsistency between the local member and the maps of the Lake Superior shoreline.

The Fall River is one of my favorite north shore waterfalls. It’s just west of Grand Marais on Highway 61 and access is about the easiest of any along Lake Superior. Below the highway, a 20- to 25-foot waterfall plunges into a big pool. During summer, you can wade out into the pool and take a bath under the falls. Hiking a few yards north of the highway gives you a great view of two beautiful falls.

This one runs mainly in spring. During a wet fall it also runs high. During the summer, it’s much more of a dribble. Because the sun hits all the falls during the day, it’s best to photograph it before and just after sunrise or at sunset. Even better is to wait for an overcast day. The darker the day, the more silky you can make the water.

Here’s a little history about the place name. From Minnesota Place Names: A Geographical Encyclopedia:

Rosebush township organized in 1907, took its name from Rosebush Creek, in translation of is Ojibwe name, Oginekan, though called “Fall River” on maps … The creek a mile farther west was mapped as “Rose Bush River.”

It’s been a long winter with a late spring. The temperatures in March were 8 degrees below normal, which kept the snow and ice frozen in the hills. Over the last week, the temperatures have hit the 40s and stayed above freezing at night, so the ice is finally turning to liquid. The streams are starting to flow. This morning I spent some time on Lake Superior trying to get a sunrise picture, but the sun is starting to set so far inland — it’s hard to get a good vantage point. After the sun came up, I photographed a small stream in the Butterwort Cliffs SNA.

In April when winter’s snowpack melts, it rushes down Lake Superior’s tributaries and over the numerous waterfalls. The waterfalls thunder, the narrow canyons fill and the ground shakes from the excess water. No other time of year allows for the dynamic photography of waterfalls along Lake Superior. Although we won’t visit the well-known and over-photographed Gooseberry Falls, we will visit dozens of waterfalls that rival it.

Weekend Activity Descriptions

This workshop combines classroom time with plenty of field-work time and a final review. You’ll learn photography techniques for capturing waterfalls. There’s plenty of time for one-on-one instruction with the small group size.

Meet at 7PM for introductions and a classroom presentation that presents techniques for capturing waterfalls in several different ways.

SATURDAY, APRIL 21
The day starts early with a morning session on the Lake Superior shoreline photographing the sunrise. Then we will break for breakfast which is available at the main lodge or on your own. We’ll assemble after breakfast and then head back out into the field for a full-day adventure. Box lunches may be ordered at the front desk. We’ll come back to the resort for dinner before heading out for the sunset.

SUNDAY, APRIL 22

D200, Lensbaby Composer, Glass Optic, Creative Aperture (because that’s what I had in). The Fall River on the north shore of Lake Superior is just outside of Grand Marais. It’s never a very big river, but it’s a nice destination, because there is a 20 foot waterfall there and a nice beach to land a kayak on. It was a pretty sunset tonight.
