Tonight I taught a Night Photography Workshop. It was 3 hours with 1 hour of classroom and 2 hours down on Artist’s Point. All week I’ve been watching the weather and crossing my fingers that it would be okay for tonight. With 35 mph winds yesterday and rain for the last week I was concerned. I tend to have a track record for the wrong weather on my workshops. For example, on the last two winter workshops, we’ve had -20 and below. On my Gales of November workshop, we had no winds and two of the most beautiful days I’ve ever seen in November. But tonight it worked out. Clear sky for attempts at star trails and just a touch too cold, but not bad.
Had a lot of questions tonight, which is what I hope for in a workshop. I always like it if I come home after a workshop with only a few shots, otherwise I don’t feel like I’m doing my job. The picture above is a demonstration shot of painting with light while walking through a photo. Some of the participants got some nice photos of me attempting to write in mirror writing “Grand Marais” except I wrote the letters too big. I saw a ton of great photos on the back of cameras, which for me is very rewarding. When the students go home with pictures better than anything that I’ve taken, I always like it.
I tried a couple new things with my slideshow and I hope it worked. I added video of aperture and shutter speed functions. It replaces me bringing a camera in and showing it on the camera. I really thought it looked better on the big screen. What I need to do in so the metering scale in use via manual camera settings on the big screen. That should be very helpful and save 10 minutes while out shooting.
Anyway, Thanks Steve, Don, Regina, Lori, Eleanor, Millie, Gerry, Jim, and Sherry. I appreciate that you came to the workshop and trusted me to be able to teach you something. I hope that you learned a few tricks and if you have questions, please, let me know.

A self-portrait taken earlier this month for a magazine that needed a head shot of me. They’re doing an article about expeditions that are going on this summer. My Around the Great Lakes Expedition is being featured as one the the trip going on this year. If you don’t know about my Around the Great Lakes Expedition here’s a quick blurb: This summer, I’m going to attempt to circumnavigate all the Great Lakes in one push by kayak. It’s a five month 3,800 mile trip. This means that I have to paddle on average 25 miles a day. Most kayakers taking a trip paddle about 15 miles a day, so this is going to be a very strenuous trip. It will be very rewarding each day.

To get this self-portrait, I put on my Kokatat short sleeve drytop and lifevest, which were given to the trip by Kokatat as a product sponsorship, set the camera on a tripod and attempted to get a good shot. I used a cross country ski pole to focus on, set the camera on a timer and ran around to the front of the camera, moved the pole and tried to look cool. It took about an hour and 30 shots to get one that I half-way liked. Did I mention that it was 10F out and I was in short sleeves?

In Dubuque, IA. Lensbaby with 0.42x Converter.

I was in Dubuque, IA last week and managed to spend an entire day shooting photos with a Lensbaby Composer and the new 0.42 Lensbaby Wide Angle converter. I went downtown Dubuque to shoot pictures of the outside of the Masonic Temple only to run into Bob Young, a member of the fraternity. As he walked up, I braced myself for the typical “you can’t shoot pictures here” speech, but that didn’t happen. Instead, Bob offered to give my mom, Ilena, and me a tour of the temple.

I only had the Lensbaby with me, so shooting at ISO 800 and using the 0.42x lens, I shot about 100 photos. Some of them, like this one, worked out better than I hoped.

This picture is of the Egyptian Room. We quizzed Bob about everything we could see including a secret shovel, which he wouldn’t let us in on the secret.

What a great day of luck!

BTW, I love the 0.42x Lensbaby converter. It makes shooting with the Lensbaby so much more fun.

A fun Lensbaby picture from a photo shoot today with Eric Larson. Eric needed some pictures of the gear that he’s using for his Save The Poles Expedition. As you can tell from the picture, polar explorers do have a sense of humor.
