The fall photography workshop consists of classroom time, field time and a slide show review. If the northern lights come out, a possibility in fall, we’ll head out for a late night photography season. Most of the time is spent in the field going to the best places for fall color. I’ll spend the days before the workshop scouting all the locations to ensure that you see areas at peak color. We head out for the sunrise and stay out until sunset on the longest day. Some participants choose to sleep in and skip the sunrise season.

Combine this workshop with a weekend stay for an extended vacation to the northshore during the best time of year for it. If you want to extend your photography instruction, I’m available after the workshop for individual lessons or small group lessons.

Lutsen Resort offers a variety of lodging options from a rustic stay in their historic lodge to upscale townhomes, cabins and condos. Two restaurants serve food on site. And two covered bridges that pass over the Poplar River offer especially scenic options for photography right at the resort. Box lunches are available.

Handheld two images changing the sweet spot from left to right between images and making sure a bush in the center was in focus each time. Stitched using Autopano Pro, which as always makes a perfect stitch.

I just finalized my fall teaching schedule with Cook County Community Education. I’m offering two workshop: Be a Better Photographer and a Gales of November Photography Workshop. Last year, I offered the Gales Workshop at Lutsen Resort and it filled quickly.

Cook County Community Education Photography Instruction

Be a Better Photographer

During this four week course, you’ll learn to be a better photographer. We’ll cover what to take a picture of, photographic composition techniques, exposure control, manual camera controls, and specific digital techniques and tools. The instructor, photographer Bryan Hansel, www.bryanhansel.com, utilizes a unique learning format. During the class, you’ll learn about a concept, spend the next week on your own practicing the concept, and then during the next class, we’ll share some of your results with the rest of the students. Ages 13 and up.

Required: Digital camera, way to get images you shoot onto a cd, usb drive, or to the instructor via email.

Gales of November Photography Workshop

Spend a day capturing the fury of the Gales of November with photographer Bryan Hansel, www.bryanhansel.com. The class will start with a brief slide show exploring the ways to shoot water. Then the class will head out to several locations on Lake Superior taking advantage of whatever conditions we find ourselves in. If the lake is calm, we’ll spend the time photographing Superior and practicing our techniques on local rivers and waterfalls. Whatever happens with the weather, this is a fun and instructive opportunity. Lake Superior Magazine wrote an article about last year’s workshop!

Required: A camera (digital is best, manual controls is best), rain gear, umbrella, a car to travel to different locations, good hiking boots, multiple warm layers, multiple batteries and plenty of camera memory, backpack to carry your equipment and rain gear.

Recommended: A camera rain jacket, tripod, polarizer filter, lunch & water.

Johnson Falls flow into Pine Lake. This is a short trip into the BWCA, but could be accomplished during a longer day trip. Very worthwhile! And I thought the falls at the Stairway Portage were the best in the BWCA. Not so, Johnson Falls has it.
