Picture from my summer bike tour from Duluth,MN to Dubuque, IA. I made this on a gravel backroad near Sandstone, MN. I strapped my tripod to my rear panniers so the camera would hang out over the side. Then I set my interval timer to shoot a bunch of pictures. Most turned out terrible, but this one is gold.

From yesterday’s wind storm. The northwind gusted to 60mph at time. The wind challenged me to hang on the ground at points. Check out the structure in the clouds. An amazing storm.

Remember, I’m teaching a Gales of November workshop this year. These are the types of images that, with the right conditions, we’ll make during the workshop.

Gales of November Photography Workshop
Date: Nov 14, 2009
Time: 9am – 5pm
Where: Grand Marais, MN
Min: 4
Max: 10
Cost: $90
To register call 387-2000.

Spend a day capturing the fury of the Gales of November with photographer Bryan Hansel, www.bryanhansel.com. The class will start with a brief slide show exploring the ways to shoot water. Then the class will head out to several locations on Lake Superior taking advantage of whatever conditions we find ourselves in. If the lake is calm, we’ll spend the time photographing Superior and practicing our techniques on local rivers and waterfalls. Whatever happens with the weather, this is a fun and instructive opportunity. Lake Superior Magazine wrote an article about last year’s workshop!

Required: A camera (digital is best, manual controls is best), rain gear, umbrella, a car to travel to different locations, good hiking boots, multiple warm layers, multiple batteries and plenty of camera memory, backpack to carry your equipment and rain gear.

Recommended: A camera rain jacket, tripod, polarizer filter, lunch & water.
