Photo Workshops! Photo Workshops! Photo Workshops!

One of the many parts of running a successful photography business is learning how to market or hiring someone who knows how. The next part is actually doing the marketing. I’ve done a terrible job this year of promoting my photography workshops, so this newsletter is all about promoting my workshops. I hope you don’t mind. These are my spring and summer workshops that have space. I also offer workshops in the fall.

As a note: Almost all my marketing is word-of-mouth. It helps keep the prices down. If I did traditional marketing, my workshop prices would be $100 per workshop more expensive to hit the suggested budgets. If you know someone who wants to learn photography or someone who you think would benefit from taking a photo workshop from me, please, let them know about my workshops. Workshops also make a great birthday gift.

Sunset in the Smoky Mountains

Spring in the Smoky Mountains

While I love the fall in the Smokies, I really love spring more. In past years, I’ve kept my spring in the Smokies as a time for vacation, personal reflection and hiking and exploring the park by myself. I just love it there in the spring and have visited during the spring more than 10 times.

This year, I decided to try a spring workshop there.

Spring wildflowers covering the forest floor, rushing mountain streams surrounded by glowing green moss, cabins flanked by flowering dogwood, freak spring storms covering the mountain tops with snow are just a few of the photographic possibilities in the Great Smoky Mountains in the spring. This four day workshop will focus on areas where the spring is showing off and will compliment my fall workshop by visiting different areas of the park.

Dates:
April 6 to 9, 2017
Cost: $699

I’m returning to Iowa one more year to run a seminar-style workshop at Neal Smith. It’s a few weeks later than normal (on Earth Day weekend), so we should have more spring flowers and it’ll be a bit more green than years past. I love this workshop, because I co-teach it with a friend of mine.

Lake Superior Spring Waterfalls Photo Workshop

Held in Grand Marais, Minnesota at the heart of the waterfall country along the North Shore of Lake Superior, this workshop is always a pleaser. We’ll see great waterfalls overflowing their banks from the melt water. On big years, you can feel the ground rumble as the water flows towards Lake Superior.

I just had one cancellation, so I have one open space.

Dates:
April 28 to 30, 2017
Cost: $349 (A $175 non-refundable deposit required at registration. The remainder is due 60 days before the workshop.)

wild flower

North Shore of Lake Superior Wildflower Photo Workshop

One of my favorite photo workshops. The bloom peaks in June on the north shore and the workshop aims to photograph that peak. Did I say lupine? And lupine is just getting going so we’ll photograph it, too. And learn about macro techniques for photographing wildflowers.

Dates:
June 16 to 18, 2017
Cost: $349 (A nonrefundable deposit of $175 is due at registration. The remainder is due 60 days before the workshop.)

Northern Night Skies: Night Photography Workshop

Learn to photograph the Milky Way, the stars, tents, canoes lit with low level lighting, learn to do star trails and much more during this workshop. We cover it all. This year the solar eclipse is during the workshop. It’ll be 70% covered in the Grand Marais area, so I’m offering it as an optional outing. Generally, this class is the first to fill, but with the eclipse many photographers are heading somewhere else. That means I have a spaces left open on this workshop.

Dates:
August 16 to 20, 2017
Cost: $699 ($350 nonrefundable commitment fee deposit due on registration. Final payment is due 60 days before the workshop)

Introduction to Macro Photography

Door County, Wisconsin. Yep. Door County, Wisconsin. I teamed up with the Peninsula School of Art to teach a marco photography course in Door County, Wisconsin. Capture the spring blooms of Door County’s wildflowers, cherry blossoms, and daffodils as you explore the process of macro photography. This technique allows you to document the fine details of the world around you, yielding rewarding and unique results. Learn how to select lenses for depth of view, utilize extension tubes to increase magnification ratios, and achieve proper exposure.
